SEO for accountants

SEO for accountants, now that the answer comes before the list.

SEO for an accounting firm used to mean ranking for local service terms. It now has a second half: being one of the handful of sources an AI assistant uses when a business owner asks who should do their books, handle a tax question or advise on a structure. Ranking and citation are decided differently, so a firm can sit at the top of Google and never be named in the answer above it.

Why the second half matters for accounting specifically

Accounting questions are exactly the shape assistants answer well: bounded, factual, and jurisdiction-specific. A business owner asking whether to register for VAT, or how a particular structure is taxed, now gets a direct answer with two or three firms named as sources.

That makes it a good category to compete in and an expensive one to be absent from, because the assistant answers the question the client would otherwise have called you to ask.

What actually works

Publish the answers to the questions clients ask, in a form that can be quoted without the surrounding page. One question per page, answered completely in the first two sentences, with the jurisdiction and the date stated plainly.

Then make sure a machine can reach it: no crawler blocking, content in the HTML rather than behind JavaScript, and structured data that says who published it and when it was reviewed.

The other half of the opportunity

Accounting is also one of the most automatable back offices there is. Client onboarding, document chasing, invoice processing and recurring reporting are all rule-shaped and all currently done by someone billable. That work is usually worth more to a firm than the marketing is.

What it is worth, and who measured it

+8.4%

A 0.1 second improvement in load speed lifted retail conversion by 8.4% and average order value by 9.2%. Same traffic, same spend, more revenue.

Deloitte and 55, commissioned by Google, “Milliseconds Make Millions”, 2020. 37 European and American brand sites, over 30 million user sessions, measured across four load metrics.

These are findings from published research on the wider market, measured by the people named beside each one. They are not results we are promising you, and we do not have client results of our own to show yet, which we would rather say plainly than dress up.

Questions

How do accountants get found by AI assistants?

By publishing self-contained answers to the questions clients actually ask, stating jurisdiction and date, and making sure the pages are reachable and parseable by an AI crawler. Consistency of firm details across the web matters too, because the assistant has to be confident which firm it is naming.

Is ranking on Google still worth it?

Yes. The ranked list has not gone away and still sends the majority of clicks. The change is that it is no longer the only place a decision is made, and the two are decided differently: roughly 80% of URLs ChatGPT cites are not in Google’s top ten for the same query.

What should an accounting firm automate?

Client onboarding, document chasing, invoice processing and recurring reporting. All four are rule-shaped, repetitive, and currently done by someone whose time is billable.
